Why People Need Vascular Surgery

The need for vascular surgery has never been higher, given the high-pressure society we live in and the easy access to the cholesterol-high foods that many patients consume. In today's world, one of the most dangerous medical conditions that exists is vascular disease. There are many different forms of vascular disease because it finds its main roots in high blood pressure and uncontrolled cholesterol levels.

Unfortunately, many people who are suffering from some form of this condition will not know that they need to seek out treatment, until the symptoms become so severe that they are life-threatening. Understanding a little bit more about vascular disease can help patients become more aware and understand the possible complications that may occur by leaving these types of conditions untreated.

Vascular surgery is a way to cure these conditions, but it is also important to understand the causes and what exactly vascular disease is, in order to prevent it.

What is vascular disease?

The vascular system is an extraordinary system that covers over 100,000 miles of blood vessels. It includes veins, arteries, and capillaries. In this vast network of blood vessels, there are conditions that occur that can cause them to not function properly and can lead to severe disability and in extreme cases, death.

One of the key factors to understand about vascular surgery is that it can be life-saving if somebody is suffering from severe vascular disease.

Common Conditions

Some of the vascular diseases that are common and can be treated through surgery include:

  1. Carotid artery disease
  2. Peripheral artery disease
  3. Critical limb ischemia
  4. Deep vein thrombosis
  5. Varicose veins
  6. Stroke

These are just some of the conditions that can be caused when a blood clot or blood vessel is blocked and causes a reduction in flow of blood to the heart or brain. Vascular conditions can also cause a weakening of blood vessels that may then burst, which will lead to bleeding inside the body and can be fatal.

Who is at risk?

Virtually any person is at risk for vascular disease and may find themselves in need of vascular surgery.

There has been a severe increase in the number of cases of obesity and type-two diabetes in America, two risk factors for this condition.

These conditions affect millions of people across the country, and it is important to understand that it can occur at any time, affecting men and women equally, and is not restricted to any specific demographic. In fact, some of these conditions can begin as early as adolescence.

What factors affect vascular disease?

We see that the following factors influence vascular disease:

  1. Pregnancy
  2. High blood pressure
  3. High cholesterol
  4. Diabetes
  5. Family history of vascular disease
  6. Obesity
  7. Smoking
  8. Stress
  9. Standing or sitting for a long period of time because of job or habits
  10. Lack of exercise or unhealthy diet

It is possible to get a vascular disease just by doing the things that you do on a daily basis. If you or a loved one are at risk of or have a vascular disease, it is important to consider all treatments and remedies available, including medicines and surgery.
